Laurens Kaldeway
Date of Artist Life
No Date Found, but he's in his mid-40's.
Personal Background
Laurens Kaldeway is married, and a father of two. He is an elementary teacher, and photography hobbyist in North Western, Ontario. He has had no formal training in photography. He is self-taught, meaning he is “muddled” through with his photography. He read photo blogs, magazines, books and he experimented a lot to learn about capturing images.
Style
Laurens Kaldeway feels he has no particular style, liking all types of images (portraits of his kids, wildlife, nature, abstract, macro). Although, he gravitates to macro and still life. He uses natural light for his photos. Sometimes with a reflector off to the side to fill in more shadows. He could never get the hang of using a camera flash.
Philosophy
Laurens Kaldeway photography is mostly personal. His work has no messages to others, except to enjoy the beauty all around them, especially in things or objects that would not normally be noticed. Some of his images have been published or sold, but that isn’t his motivation. He uses a DSLR Camera and a variety of lenses, depending on the situation. He would like to get better at iPhone photography, that will be a summer project for him.
Influences
Laurens Kaldeway doesn’t have any photographers that he copies. He does follow some on Instagram, 500px and YourShot National Geographic. Although only because He like the quality of their work, or their creativity, or honesty in their craft. Other influences are time and family. It’s hard to carve out time to shoot when you have a family and a full time job.

Compare and Contrast
My image isn't as clear as his is. The order of the colored pencils are off by one in my image. The background color isn't as clear in mine, as it is in his. I was able to recreate the bubbles. My colored pencils I used are similar to what he used in his image. |
Compare and Contrast
The background in my image is clearer to see, like his is. The order of the colored pencils are the same. The length of the colored pencils into the water are a little different in both photos. The bubbles on my photo aren't as clear as the ones on his photo. In my photo you can kind of see the water line, but in his photo you can't. |
Compare and Contrast
The background on mine is not as blurry/out of focus as it is on his. The black colored pencils bubbles are not as visual to see on mine as his photo. The background isn't as blended together as much as his is. The order of the colored pencils are the same for the background. The black colored pencil tip stops at the first yellow colored pencil you see. |
Artist Statement
Laurens Kaldeway work has inspired me a lot, because I love the colors he decided to use for his colored pencil photos. I loved how some of his colored pencil photos had a pattern to go along with them being in the water, or out. With his colored pencil photos I loved how the bubbles give the colored pencils a little bit of a 3D look to them. Its really cool, because if your use the rule of thirds, all four points hit a colored pencil, and there is also a focal point within the photo. I loved recreating his colored pencil images, because I wanted to experiment myself on how bubbles can form around an object or whatever you decide to put into the water.
